"Shiwan art does not stand apart from the common people, as do many works from the better known kilns of Dehua and Jingdezhen, as perfected stylized intellectual objects. Possibly that is one reason why the Shiwan products have rarely been appreciated by the scholars and intelligentsia. Perhaps this deficit can be rectified by accepting the work for what it is rather than be invidious comparisons against classical art. It speaks its own message and that is unique"

It is interesting to search Google images for "Shiwan" in Chinese ( 石湾 ). Once there you can sort through the images and translate a lot of interesting reading through them.

This one is one of my favorites. Gathering of Earthly Gods: Shiwan Wares from the Collections of the International Shiwan Ceramics Association

Huge book/journal at 328 pages, and simply loaded with pieces and scholarly information

Going to be hard to find a bargain for this one, but at the time of this posting, there is one for 115.00. If your seeing this and interested in a great book, better grab this one now, as the only other copy available anyplace online is US$1245.00.

Hello and welcome new members :)

Like the "About This Forum" reads within the sidebar:

"This Shiwan pottery collecting group forum is dedicated to the novice, more experienced, and expert collectors. Topics are intended to cover all aspects and types of utilitarian and artistic Shiwan pottery collecting and research. To include contemporary, Qing, Ming, Song, Tang and earlier pottery symbology, kilns, glaze, marks and history of Shiwan wares".

I am brand new to collecting Shiwan ware. There are other places online where pieces are shared, but little if any discussions is contributed towards detailed research. Or pieces get pushed off into the archives with no opportunity for taking our time to patiently discuss in depth features about the piece.

So in an effort to bring collectors togethers who are interested in learning and sharing more than just posting a picture elsewhere online, this forum was created.

Looking forward to meeting other collectors interested in learning and sharing in greater detail about Shiwan wares. Any help from experienced collectors will be greatly appreciated !

Over the next several days and weeks I will add as much interesting reading to the forum as my limited knowledge allows, which will come from and be credited to books and other online research sources.

The forum is BB code friendly. So you can use third party photo hosting services like Photobucket, Imgur and others for adding BB codes for images to your posts. Alternately, you are welcome to use the forums photo hosting service to upload your images to your posts.

If you need any help navigating and using any of the forums features, please just ask..
